The Torbay Catchment Group (TCG) has received funding in 2010 via the Department of Water, from State Government Natural Resource Management (NRM) funding, to help improve the health of the Torbay catchment. An important part of this is to assist landowners to manage their properties at a catchment level; that means integrating farming practices, drainage, perennial pastures, nutrient management and natural areas in a way that protects the environment... and the future of farming in the catchment.

The Torbay Catchment Group can provide up to:

  • $2400/km for fencing waterways and wetlands
  • $450 / ha for seedlings for revegetation
  • $240 / ha seed for riparian revegatation
  • Other projects not specifically listed here, but achieve the objectives of improving water quality in the catchment may be considered. Talk to us about your ideas!
  • We can also offer advice and assistance with weed identification and control on your property

Why should I take up this funding offer?

Protecting waterways, such as creeks, artificial drains and wetlands is an important part of property management. This protection will help improve water quality by:
  • Removing excess nutrients from waterways (these nutrients are causing toxic algal blooms)
  • Reduce the number of nutrients entering waterways
  • Stopping erosion and sedimentation
  • Protecting native vegetation
  • Helping to control pathogens which can have an impact on human health
  • Recreating the natural processes of waterways which keeps them clean and full of life

How do I get involved?

The grant process is as simple as meeting with the Project Officer on site and deciding on locations, design and materials. This information is then taken to the TCG Executive Committee that will assess the application. Upon satisfactory completion of the works you must invoice the TCG who will provide you with the agreed funds.

In some instances we will provide the materials direct to you, rather than a financial subsidy (eg supply of native seedlings for revegetation).

We are keen to get as many landholders involved as possible to see real improvements in the catchments natural assets, like Lake Powell and Torbay Inlet. We are here to help you with technical advice and, where possible provide labour assistance for project implementation through partnering with a National Green Jobs Corps traineeship team.

This project is managed by the community, for the community and we encourage everyone to come on board to help restore the catchment to a healthy condition.
