Drinking water demands


There are many issues that need to be explored in the development of a restoration plan for the Torbay catchment. Although it might be too ambitious to think we will attain unanimous support for all solutions arrived at in addressing these issues, it is important that concerns of all stakeholders are carefully considered und understood so that the options we eventually adopt are those that deliver the greatest benefits to the community and environment as a whole.

Three issues that are of immediate and overarching importance are

  • The increased incidence of algal blooms in the lower catchment's watercourses
  • Management of the lower drainage district
  • Meeting Albany's drinking water demands

Arising from these issues, the project will be concerned with

 

Community Forums

During June 2002 three community forums were held within the catchment, at Elleker, Torbay and Redmond. The attendees were asked to define areas where more information or knowledge is required, to suggest what the environmental, social and economic issues were for the catchment and to suggest possible solutions, and to outline a vision for the catchment towards which everyone could work.
