Workgroups A large range of individuals and groups have a direct or indirect interest in management of the Torbay catchment. From time to time, the project will seek the input of all interested people, and will especially seek comment when developing management scenarios, options, and actions.

The management of our water resources and catchments would be easy if there were no uncertainties regarding the causes of environmental problems and if the priorities of all landholders and interest groups were the same. This is plainly not the case, and there is a need to investigate the physical, biological and socio-economic interactions that lead to undesirable outcomes.

Groups that are critical in the exploration and resolution of these interactions are:

The Torbay Catchment Group
The Torbay Catchment Group formed following interest generated at a community meeting at Elleker Hall in March 1999. Eighty eight people attended talks on environmental issues in the catchment. This fantastic turn-out showed that as a community, we are concerned with the waterways in our area.
Friends of Lake Powell
The Friends of Lake Powell has come together to learn more about the lake and educate others, get out on the Lake to keep an eye on it so that management can be improved, help with practical management and to generally enjoy visiting the lake together.
The Community Steering Committee
The Community Steering Committee is the central river restoration team. It comprises members who have intimate knowledge of the local area and who represent the major land uses and interests associated with the Torbay catchment. It acts as a melting pot for the various perspectives of landholders, government agencies, scientists and other stakeholders. The Steering Committee is working successfully towards developing some community objectives and a catchment vision.
The Technical Advisory Committee

Our knowledge of the environment in which we live will never be complete. Decision-makers and the community need to identify actions on the basis of the best information available.

To provide ready access to expertise involving key issues confronting the Torbay catchment, a Technical Advisory Committee has been formed. Where scientific investigation can lead to improved understanding and greater clarity in decision-making, the Technical Committee will undertake research.

The priorities for research, the communication of results, and the successful incorporation of findings into on-ground actions relies on constant dialogue between the Steering Group, the Torbay Catchment Group, and the Technical Advisory Committee. In consultation with the wider community, an important function of the Technical Committee is to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of actions so that we can learn from mistakes and share our successes.

The Project Support Team

This group meets monthly to ensure that the project milestones, research, planning, communications and coordination is on track, trouble shoots any issues arising throughout the project progress, and sets agendas for the Technical Advisory Group and Steering Group meetings.
Drainage Management Committee

The Drainage Management Committee was set up in 2003 in order to focus on the specific issues that arise from the extensive drainage in the Torbay catchment.

The collective aim of these groups is to foster action-led learning through the collaborative involvement of researchers, agencies and the community.
