Its time friends, catchment folk to ask yourselves what you think you can do to help with the big task ahead to improve the health of the catchment. "Fencing", its a wonderful and necessary part of our way of life if we look beyond ourselves and think of our floral and faunal friends. You will read about some great fencing work being done by some of our neighbours. Good on all of you out there fencing, planting, soil testing, liming, putting in perennials, weeding and generally keeping an eye out for each other. The catchment tour was a great way to see some of the work and have a snag and a natter.

Perhaps you have some amusing and not so amusing stories of your efforts on your land - bogged tractors, near misses. Lets hear them. There is money to give you a leg up with helping out - if you haven't taken it up - why not go for it? Talk to Steve 9841 0120 or Karen 9841 0128 who will come out and visit on your place.

The catchment meetings have been revved up with talks or tours at each one - so come along.

Regards Phil Mellon

Work already underway
Over the last few months landholders have applied for assistance for 20kms of fencing. Two perennial pasture trials have been seeded with more planned. The Catchment Group is working with Summit Fertilisers on a number of fertiliser trials that will keep going over the next five years.

Further funds available - what can be funded?
Projects can receive 50% of the cost of materials, but projects with high environmental benefits can have up to 100% of material costs subsidised.

  • Up to $2000/km for fencing of waterways, drains, and bushland
  • Seedlings and tree guards up to $900/ha
  • Up to $400 for watering points to reduce impact of stock on waterways
  • Up to $1000 for vehicle and stock crossings
  • Up to $75/ha to establish perennial pastures
We are especially keen to help anyone interested in fencing and planting perennials in the Torbay main drain sub-catchment or if you have not applied before as well as those who are already active.

How do I apply?
The grant process is simple. Meet with the Torbay Catchment Project Officer, Steve May, and decide on the locations, design and materials. Fill out and sign a simple application. The design and costs are then taken to the Torbay Catchment Group committee who assess the application. Upon satisfactory completion of the works you send a tax invoice to the TCG who provide the agreed funds.

Ring Steve 9841-0120, Andrew Marshall 9845-1081, or Maurice McCormick 9845-1044 to discuss your project. See the application and further information flyer available from Steve.
