What a year 2006 has been for the Torbay Catchment Group! For our group to come from the small beginnings of local residents worried about algal blooms, to achieving national recognition by taking out (1) the Thiess National Riverprize, and (2) the CSBP Environment and Landcare award in the Regional Achievement and Community Award. The awards have created a lot of media interest and raised our profile. Good Stuff! This year has been a busy one for the group and all the stakeholders starting the work of implementing the catchment restoration plan. Thank you to Karen and Steve through their respective positions, by guiding and disseminating all that is needed to get the work happening behind the scenes and on the ground. We've also had a range of interesting speakers at the meetings this year, something that we will continue next year, to encourage more people along. Send us your thoughts! It has been especially interesting hearing from the timber industry this year. The timber precinct is located at the top of the catchment and may have consequences for us. Huge! We will be hearing from those involved again. Next year - well there will more of the same. More involvement with all our neighbours in the catchment, be they locals, industry, government or farmers. More speakers, workshops and field days to promote the message of caring for our catchment. More work on the ground to protect our waterways from algal blooms. More, more MORE!
And more from me later. Regards Phil Mellon |

![]() The Torbay Catchment Group has collected another award for their work in improving the condition of the Torbay catchment. The Regional Achievement and Community Awards were presented at a gala dinner in Perth on November 10, where the group was represented by Phil and Gina Mellon, Terri and Tim Harwood and John and Marg Blaney-Murphy. The Torbay Catchment Group won the CSBP Environment and Landcare Award category. The award recognised the work undertaken to develop a restoration plan for the Torbay catchment. The plan is designed to address community concerns about the land degradation occurring in the catchment, particularly algal blooms in the catchment waterbodies. This award comes after the Catchment Group won the Thiess National Riverprize in September. |
