What's inside... Marshall's wetland monitoring data More work to do Agroforestry field day Farming in the UK Perennial pastures Windbreaks 2008 Riverprize |
Seasons Greetings Summer, Christmas, Schoolies/Toolies, Farmers/ Gardeners all. Here we are again, that great growing season where we wish the weather would make it's mind up hot or cold (Hands up who didn't light their fire in November?). Talking about growing things, "Watsonias NOT" A couple of us went on a drive around to see how effective this year's Watsonia hunt went. We were delighted to see, as some people have commented, that we got a good coverage throughout the Catchment. From the eastern to the western edges we reckon that we got a 90% effectiveness from what was targeted (weather being the delay on some plans). But we'll git em next year. We would like to thank the working crews from; Dept of Corrections, City of Albany, Westnet Rail, locals like Chris and Rhonda Westcott and those of you who dabbled within your own properties for the time and efforts to achieve this. We would also acknowledge that these same crews not only did the works within Torbay Catchment but also elsewhere and the approaches to our catchment, meaning that we will end up with a good buffer. We had inquiries as to the Inlet opening. We have asked the Watercorp for the reasoning behind the last opening (1st ovember). They needed to open it due to a combination of factors: the high water levels at the time were encroaching into a landowner's property near Lake Powell, tides, the short term forecast, high rainfall on the next weather system (which didn't happen) and the long term forecast for more rain. Lets hope their long term is accurate as it has been a long time since we have seen beaches on the northern shores of the inlet as we do now. Have a prosperous New year. We'll see you then. Regards, Phil Mellon

Please enjoy your Catchment Calendar included with the December newsletter.
Enjoy photos of local scenes along with handy tips to help you look after your
property, while looking after the Torbay Catchment are included for your
information. Catchment group meeting dates are included too.
Many thanks to the local photographers who contributed photos. I'm sorry that I couldn't have included more. I welcome your feedback on the calendar. If it is well received, we will consider doing it again, but we may need to look at recovering some costs eg: selling the calendars or including advertising. Let me know what you think. Have a Merry Christmas and a fantastic 2008 ! Karen McKeough
