In recognition of the importance of the Torbay catchment to local residents and the people of the south coast for its fishing, farming, tourism and conservation values, the Torbay Catchment Group formed following interest generated at a community meeting at Elleker Hall in March 1999.

The mission of the Group is:

"An environmentally clean, balanced ecology supporting a prosperous community in which people respect each other's use of the catchment and waterways"

The group is committed to the implementation of the Torbay Catchment Restoration Plan. This is a comprehensive plan that identifies a broad range of tasks, with the Torbay Catchment Group and partner agencies working together with landholders to improve the health of the Torbay catchment.

Some of the projects the Group has been involved with so far:

  1. Watershed Torbay: Special funding has been obtained to better understand the state of the catchment, and to develop a catchment restoration plan which includes implementation (on-ground works) and investment planning (how money will be raised to carry out the work) for the catchment
  2. Watsonia Control: An annual organised control spraying of Watsonia and woody weeds is carried out
  3. Waterway Fencing: An impressive number of land owners are taking advantage of funding to fence and revegetate waterways, build stock crossings and off-stream stock watering points to minimise erosion and reduce nutrient input into catchment waterways
  4. Wetlands: The construction of wetlands for nutrient stripping
